‘Dyffryn Tywi – Hanes Tirwedd Ein Bro’ is a valley-wide project that covers the middle part of the Tywi Valley between Llandeilo and Carmarthen. Funded through the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Management Scheme, it is about how we look after our local landscape, now and for the future, to benefit the valley’s environment and people.
The character of the Tywi Valley within the project area has been defined historically by traditional farming and land management practices. The project aims to support this distinctive local environment by promoting and encouraging a better understanding of our past relationship with nature – how people cared for the land, and the influence of traditional farming practice on the development of the landscape we see today.
The Dyffryn Tywi project focuses on three aspects of traditional land management, typical of this area in the past: hedgerows, meadows and parkland, and aims to show how understanding past local land management can inform current and future practice, and that reviving and using traditional skills more widely, can benefit the environment.
The Dyffryn Tywi project is currently working with the Initiative for Nature Conservation Cymru (INCC) and other partner organisations in Carmarthenshire to identify and map the remaining meadow habitats in the project area. Local knowledge and experience of wildlife and habitats are crucial for developing landscape projects like Dyffryn Tywi.

Yes, we did get a reply from Bruce, to the effect that if we’re just outside the boundary, let him or Rob know about our sites and they can decide whether or not to tweak the line a bit! We’re hoping the Dyffryn Tywi project’s motto is not “Build that wall!”

Over many years have worked on reclaiming upland meadow steep slopes from bracken by juggling lovel ewe grazing,and reclaiming forest,also for butterfly conservation(S.pratensis).Later ( next month ) will appreciate a visit,or later for 2 orchid spp.-Dactylorchis and Platanthera.Will be in cotact,Dr.Q.D.MacGarvie,Cynwyl Elfed.01267 281 69.
